Glucosamine (often marketed as the sulphated derivative) is an amino sugar and a prominent
precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. Glucosamine is part of the
structure of chitosan and chitin, complex polysaccharides that comprise the exoskeletons of crustaceans (crabs, prawns, shrimp and the like). Glucosamine is usually manufactured commercially by the hydrolysis of such crustacean exoskeletons.
